iPhone 3G S announced

June 9th, 2009

As endlessly predicted, Apple’s unveiled a new iPhone today at WWDC, the iPhone 3G S — the “s” stands for speed.

Although it looks almost exactly like the 3G, it’s much, much faster — some tasks are almost four times faster. Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 megapixel unit with tap-to-autofocus and auto white balance — and just as expected, it now supports 30fps VGA video recording with editing features.

You’re also getting a built-in compass, Nike+ support, and a new battery that offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use.

There are some surprises, too — holding down the home button now enables a new voice control interface that lets you do everything from make calls to control iTunes, and Apple’s touting a new “fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating.”

Bluetooth 3.0 + HS gets official, adds speed with 802.11

April 22nd, 2009

The rumors were true, and today’s the day that the Bluetooth SIG gets official with the latest, greatest version of Bluetooth. Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, as it’ll be called, promises to be markedly faster than prior iterations thanks to the reliance on 802.11, which is the same protocol used by WiFi modules, routers, etc. The new standard obviously catapults Bluetooth into a new dimension; rather than being good for nothing more than sending images from one phone to another or syncing a fitness module to a DAP, v3.0 is nimble enough to handle camcorder-to-HDTV, PC-to-PMP and UMPC-to-printer transfers.

Major smartphone platforms survive Pwn2Own

March 26th, 2009

Sure seems like your handheld is a lot more secure than your computer, at least in some sense — although the desktop versions of IE 8, Safari, and Firefox were each almost instantly cracked on the first day of the Pwn2Own contest, no one claimed the $10,000 bounty placed on each of the major smartphone platforms. That’s certainly reassuring, but it may not ultimately mean much: according to contest organizers Tipping Point, the bugs in Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile, and the iPhone and BlackBerry OSes are still there, but they’re harder to exploit because of device, OS, and carrier variations. That makes any vulnerabilities even more valuable — one of the contestents apparently had an iPhone exploit ready to go, but wasn’t willing to part with it since he wanted more than $10K for it. Tipping Point says it’ll try and nail down specs of each platform earlier next year to make it easier on hackers, but let’s hope the results are similar.

The Ultimate Bling?

March 9th, 2009

The On Time Headset System, though it’s actually a bracelet that tells the time and handles all your incoming and outgoing phone calls. It will alert you to phone calls with rings and/or vibration. Vibration is good for quiet environments like the library.

The entire face of the On Time Headset System pops out as a wireless headset and when you use it as such, you still have a display since there is a secondary LCD display built-in. Both LCD displays would be touch enabled for ease-of-use. It’s a concept at the moment, but you can easily see the benefits of wearing rather then carrying your phone.

Nokia working on laptops?

February 26th, 2009

If you were looking for proof that the line between smartphones and laptops is rapidly starting to blur, look no further — Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasuvo told Reuters today that the Finnish company is “looking very actively” at making a laptop, since “what we we know as a cellphone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging.”

There are many in the market who are very “brand loyal” to Nokia in terms of their phones, but will this loyalty stand when it comes to their home computer?
